January Review: Part One

The end to January already. I thought I would give a quick rundown on some highlights of things we did last month.

Georgia finished her Africa poster, including a color coded map key, and animals of Africa in their correct biome. We had studied the people, cutures from Ashanti to Zulu, the land, resources, conservation issues, plants, animals, and daily life of Africans from all over the continent. We played and listened to the thumb piano, read folktales, listened to music, and watched some documentaries. (The National Geographic series on Africa is wonderful! We all enjoyed them, even Olivia. We got them from Netflix.)

Olivia also finished her painting, which now adds charm to our living room where it hangs.

Georgia had a reading level assessment in January. Her RLA is 47, which puts her reading level at a late fourth grade, early fifth grade level. She began reading chapter books this month. In fact, once she starts she doesn't stop! She finishes her chapter books in only two or three sittings! This month she read three books by E.B. White; Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan. She also read Beverly Cleary's Ramona and Her Father.

Georgia finished her studies on Antarctica and the Arctic. She learned about adaptations of plants, animals, and people for their environment. She was given her first research project. She was to choose an animal of her choice and find out how they are adapted for their environment. Of course, she chose the gemsbok, one of her favorite animals. She has completed her research and note taking and is now in the process of using her notes to write her rough draft.
